Happy New Year from The Camellia!

Wow! This past year has whizzed by, and now it's going to be 2015. We found a great video for you to watch, especially for all of you who are making New Year's resolutions.

It's the hardest thing to change one's habits - to eat meals on time, to eat healthy meals, to take the time to prepare healthy snacks,  to cook meals instead of grabbing take-out.

What are you resolving to do this year?
For some of us , we are vowing to take more time for ourselves, to slow down, to stop constantly DOING.... To sit and take a half-an-our for ourselves, to read a book. And to not feel guilty for doing this.

Some of us want to travel more. What can you do to make that happen?

Some of us want to declutter and throw out stuff we no longer need. Organize, organize, organize.

We wish you the very best in 2015, and Thank you for letting us be part of your Lives!!
We have upcoming classes in Beginners' Cottage Paint, check out our classes at http://www.thecamellia.com/classes-at-the-camelia.html
For our hours, phone us at 475-3551
Happy New Year!

Christmas 2014 hours, The Camellia, Thunder Bay, On

Question: are you ready for Christmas?

Answer: NO

We all have great intentions of getting it ALL Done...

But Life gets in the way, so you might be like me, running around trying to find a tree, mailing presents that will get there too late, and cards that have yet to be sent overseas. (Thank goodness for the e-card sites like Jacquie Lawson).
SO DO WHAT YOU CAN GET DONE AND LEAVE THE REST.
As for presents, well, let's not get started.

FLOWERS & WREATHS make the perfect Gift ....Call today to order, we have a few left - small cedar wreaths, large Magnolia, evergreen and birch wreaths, and a vase of cut flowers with evergreens is a great choice.
Call us at 475-3551  to order for delivery, or you can order & pick -up at our store
.
Out-of-towners can use our toll-free, 1-877-523-7444.

I often wish I had time to sit and light a candle. Come into out store for Canadian Soy candles.  Earlier this Spring, I visited the Yankee Candle store in Williamsburg, VA.  Candles make your decor sparkle, but do not leave unattended. It is very important to trim your wicks, so here is some how-tos from Yankee Candle.
Keep wick trimmed to 1/8 inch at all times. The wick should be trimmed every 4 hours of burn time. Simply extinguish the flame, let the candle come to room temperature, and trim the wick to 1/8 of inch before relighting. Our Wick Trimmers make this task easy and creates a nice clean cut that properly maintains the wick.
Place the bottom of the trimmer flush with the surface of the candle.
Rock the trimmer back so that the “elbow” now rests on the surface of the candle.
Ensure that your trimmer is at a 45-degree angle to ensure the proper wick length. This will prevent the wick from being cut too short or causing the candle to burn improperly.
Bring the two handles together to trim the wick. Discard the remnant wick before lighting.
To keep wick at 1/8” at all times, it is suggested to trim the wick every four hours of burn time.
Keeping the wick trimmed to 1/8 of an inch at all times helps control the amount of “fuel” or wax that is present. By keeping the amount of fuel limited, the flame will create ideal complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This means less soot is formed while the candle is burning. The formation of soot has nothing to do with the type of wax (soy, paraffin, vegetable, or other) as all burning items create soot as a product of incomplete combustion. It all has to do with the quality of the wick and the proper care of the candle!
Candles should not be burned for more than four hours at a time. It is recommended that they burned for four hours, then extinguished and let cool for two hours before relighting.

How to dress up your Holiday planters even if ground is frozen.

How many of you are just getting into the Christmas mode, and wanting to dress up your planters , which are of course, frozen solid. Usually I do evergreens in my planters  in September, after we have had 2 killing frosts. What can you do? First, pull out the dead flowers.

Cut some young Birch trees, and place the birch poles on top of the soil in the planter.

Cut bunches of balsam, and attach bundle to bitch log using cable ties. Keep making up bundles of balsam, and attach at various points to the birch poles.

When it snows, your boughs will be covered so it is a good idea to leave some greens hanging over the edges of your planter.

Add some red pine, or cedar, or other evergreens you may have on hand.

You can add a pair of skates, old watering cans, ribbons, large sugar cones, and more.

This is my pile of balsam which came from our trails in the bush, which needed trimming.

For great Gifts , and Flowers for delivery in the Thunder Bay Area, call The Camellia at (807)475-3551 or toll -free at 1-877-523-7444. We are at 30, Hacquoil Rd. Slate River. and are Open Wed. 11-5, Thurs. 12-6. Fri. 11-5. Sat. 11-5. Sun. 12-5
Happy Gifting!

Evergreen classes at The Camellia

If you need a little Christmas, take a class at The Camellia.
Smell those fresh Evergreens...

What are your memories of Christmas? Most of us associate Christmas with Family get-togethers, lots of food and baking, and Gifts. Maybe a turkey with potatoes. Well, before I came to Canada, my kind of normal was my relatives making lots of food, everyone getting together, and heading off to THE BEACH! No bundling yourself into so many clothes that eventually you bear a close resemblance to the Michelin man! An even 85degrees F in the shade was my kind of normal. Never ate a potato until I came to Canada. Does Santa Claus dress up with all those clothes and does he have a beard in the Tropics? Of course, he does! and many Christmases ago, I did run away, to Barbados.

So, let's talk about Christmas dinner. Are you having the whole gang over, and wondering what to use for a tablecloth? Shea Butter & Winterizing your skin, The Camellia, Thunder Bay

Some of us are Winter people, and some of us just HATE Winter, well, maybe we love it until Christmas, then we would be quite happy if it just went away. It's minus thirty something out there , feels like -500. Taking a hot Bath definitely helps you warm up, and is something to look forward to at the end of a long day, especially if you have  a tub like this one...

This Green and White colour scheme is so soothing...reminds you of Spring, and Tulips, and flowers...ooops..we're supposed to be talking about talking about winter Skincare. I've just fast-forwarded myself to Spring !

The Inspiration bathrooms above can be found in a delightful Bath store that specializes in Bath fixtures, in Mountainview, CA.

Reality is for most of us, far removed from this.....soppy wet towels thrown on the floor, tubs that need washing before we can even think about taking a bath in them, someone's dirty laundry thrown over there, and so on. Does this ever happen in your household?

Wintertime is rough on our skin, low humidity levels combined with forced-air heat and being indoors for most of our day, all combine to make out skin look and feel like the desert. This is our go-to-solution, Everyday Shea lotion, and Shea butter. You can buy it in our store, The Camellia, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

We also carry the Beekman Boys Goats' Milk soaps, wonderful for your skin.

These little Guest packs make the perfect Gift, and can be bought at The Camellia. ( and if you are staying in NYC at one of the better hotels, you would probably find Beekman 1802 in the bathroom.)

For unique Bath products, come Visit The Camellia, 30 Hacquoil Rd.

Christmas Open House 2014 at The Camelia

The best time to decorate for the Holidays is now. You are warmly Invited to our Christmas Open house at The Camellia .

Above is our signature Magnolia Wreath with Birch twigs...beautiful for any season.

This is out most luxuriant Evergreen with Magnolia wreath..a  dramatic entranceway piece.

The matching door swag for the wreath in the previous photo.

We are all familiar with the TV ads showing a beautifully decorated Home with a family sitting around a festive table, enjoying a fabulous home-cooked meal. Reality is sometimes far removed from this picture,
"What's that ###%% thing on the door, I can't even close the door properly?!"
"OMG...that wreath is shedding on the carpet....."
"Why can't you have a fake tree like everyone else , that way we can shove it in the closet,  ornaments and all.."
"Do we have to put up a tree..let's just go to Barbados.."
"Just throw the thing in a Gift bag, you don't expect me to wrap the thing up...?"

If you love a beautifully decorated Home, then start now. Come out to our Christmas Open house at The Camellia. See the Handmade, Vintage, the new Greys with Frosty Whites. Bring your photos in on your phone, or email them to us, we can help you with what to put where. Our Christmas Open House is on this Sat. Nov. 22, & Sun. Nov. 23rd. and continues all next week and next weekend, Nov. 29, and 30. If you are going on the Christmas House Tour, we will be Open early on Sunday, Nov. 23 and will close late.
Sat. 11-5
Sun. 10-6.

In and out of the ditches cutting red osier dogwood branches,

..to make giant cedar and twig wreaths.

Have box, will travel. A wreath makes a perfect Gift for someone who used to live here, and now lives out in some other part of Canada. Simply place wreath in box, and mail or send by bus.
\

Since it's all evergreens, it doesn't matter if it freezes. Imagine the delight and the aroma of fresh greens, you can't bottle that. Try to get your orders in early, especially if it has to be shipped. A round of Gouda cheese from Thunder Oak Cheese Farm would fit nicely in the middle.

We have some large statement wreaths, and garlands at crazy reduced prices, and lots of ornaments on 40 to 50%off. Picks, pointsettia bushes, huge decorated garlands, large wreaths, ornaments, and lots more!

If you are going Black Friday shopping in Duluth, you can stop in here first, shop, and leave your purchases here for pick-up or delivery later in the week.
