Step away from the black

Step away from the Black and embrace colour. Everywhere you go, Black is a uniform. A busload of tourists unload at the Ice fields in B.C. almost all are wearing black leggings. Waiters and Waitresses at restaurants are all wearing black. If you too are wearing black, look out.....when you get up from your table, someone will ask you to get them a drink or something. has this ever happened to you? You are slightly put out by their request and the person that asked you feels ..well..silly. and kind of embarrassed.   Business people wear black to look professional. And ..the situation gets compounded when it's Winter and some people lose all their colour, all that black is not too flattering with very pale skin. In Victorian times, black was worn to symbolize a period of mourning. Women showed their grief through wearing Black which represented the lack of light.
It is quite symbolic that we are mostly wearing black in this day, what are we mourning for?

Brown is not as harsh as black, but still looks lovely. Come into The Camellia today to see our Shrugs, they come in one size and many colours.

You can jazz black up with purples and blues, throw a scarf on, and instant style! We stock many colours and  the Infinity scarves .

Pattern can change things up, like this Vera Bradley handbag, along with a hand-made scarf from Sarah. Sarah is an artisan and draws her inspiration from Lake Superior.

Neutral handbags are always in style.

Add a flirty, pretty scarf  ... no-one said that you can't look pretty and be warm .

The colour Red is an instant pick- you-upper. Come visit #TheCamellia today for a new handbag, scarf and other accessories.

Cottage Paint projects

Cottage Paint is so easy to use...no sanding or stripping, just paint. Low vocs. and water-based, and it is available in many colours. This colour is Dragonfruit. Today we are going to share some of our recent Cottage Paint redos.

Beautiful colours for the Fall season.. from left : Canyon,  Martini Olive and Golden Harvest.

One of our store props that desperately needs Cottage Paint. This is a very old piece that came (we think) from Holland many years ago when our family moved to Canada. It is in rough shape , some of the wood veneer is lifting. The top is stained badly .

After a good dusting and wipe-down with TSP, I started painting with Antique White, 2 coats.

Then a wipe-back with a damp rag to do a light distress. You can see where the wood veneer is lifting. Final finish with 2 coats of flat acrylic varnish.

A nightstand that has seen better days, picked up from the thrift store.

First coat of Antique White, this piece was done with one 8oz. jar. of Cottage Paint. Finished with a jar of flat acrylic wax.

We sell these stencils at The Camellia, along with Cottage Paint, brushes, and glazes and varnishes and waxes.

The finished piece, what a transformation!

Here is a piece that was sent in by a client...formerly done in hunter green, transformed with Cottage Paint - colour Waterdrop. This piece happily resides at her Camp..her next project is repainting the kitchen table to match this piece. This is awesome, you can have a mad mix of furniture that can all be painted to co-ordinate with each other.

Visit The Camellia for Cottage Paint...and much more. 30, Hacquoil Rd. Slate River, just outside Thunder Bay, p-807-475-3551. We are open Wed. through Sunday. This Saturday 11-5, but tomorrow, Sunday we will be closed. Visit www.thecamellia.com and click on the Cotage Paint link at the top of the website.

Welcome to the first Day of Autumn!

Fall is a glorious  riot of colour - shades of browns, rusts, oranges, and yellows. Fall arrangements can be subdued, in shades of greens and whites. The bucket in the photo above holds Queen Anne's lace and mini ornamental cabbage.

Makes a bold statement, with only 2 colours.

Dried Wreaths are so lovely, this wreath contains manzanita branches, wheat, proteas and pomegranates. Come into the Camellia today to order your custom Fall wreath, or take a class and make your own.

We have  a great selection of stylish, water and stain repellent tablecloths in stock at The Camellia.

Decorate with Lanterns,  they are great for all seasons.

Echoes of Summer and the Nicotina plants which the humming birds love. Fall is bittersweet, beautiful, yet hinting at the cold weather to come. Take a drive into the Country and stop in at The Camellia, we are Open Wed. 11-5, Thurs. 12-5, Fri. 11-6, Sat. 11-5, Sun. 12-5.  Cottage Paint class ( Beginners' ) coming up this Thursday from 6.30 to 9. Falling into Fall, reluctantly

It's September already...and some of us want to hang onto that last little bit of heat, we don't want our plants to freeze, and we have no desire to dig out coats, boots, and even socks. As for the S  - word, please, let's not go there. Time to think about transitional floral arrangements - these ease into the different seasons without any effort or extra fanfare. Like this stunning Magnolia arrangement above. The leaves look nice long after they have dried up.

Look at the colours of these pomegranates, great to add to a wooden bowl as a quick centrepiece.

Time to cut those hyrangea blooms, to make up wreaths .

Continue to appreciate each and every sunny day with blue skies.

It's easier to sleep now that the nights are a bit cooler.

Think about taking a Fall course at The Camellia.

Sit by Lake Superior and enjoy the running water .
We will reopen at The Camellia on Sept. 19th. In the meantime, if you need anythuing, leave a message at 807-472-8193. or 807-475-3551
