We all have great intentions of getting it ALL Done... But Life gets in the way, so you might be like me, running around trying to find a tree, mailing presents that will get there too late, and cards that have yet to be sent overseas. (Thank goodness for the e-card sites like Jacquie Lawson). SO DO WHAT YOU CAN GET DONE AND LEAVE THE REST. As for presents, well, let's not get started. Come into out store for Canadian Soy candles.  Earlier this Spring, I visited the Yankee Candle store in Williamsburg, VA.  Candles make your decor sparkle, but do not leave unattended. It is very important to trim your wicks, so here is some how-tos from Yankee Candle. Keep wick trimmed to 1/8 inch at all times. The wick should be trimmed every 4 hours of burn time. Simply extinguish the flame, let the candle come to room temperature, and trim the wick to 1/8 of inch before relighting. Our Wick Trimmers make this task easy and creates a nice clean cut that properly maintains the wick. Place the bottom of the trimmer flush with the surface of the candle. Rock the trimmer back so that the “elbow” now rests on the surface of the candle. Ensure that your trimmer is at a 45-degree angle to ensure the proper wick length. This will prevent the wick from being cut too short or causing the candle to burn improperly. Bring the two handles together to trim the wick. Discard the remnant wick before lighting. To keep wick at 1/8” at all times, it is suggested to trim the wick every four hours of burn time. Keeping the wick trimmed to 1/8 of an inch at all times helps control the amount of “fuel” or wax that is present. By keeping the amount of fuel limited, the flame will create ideal complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This means less soot is formed while the candle is burning. The formation of soot has nothing to do with the type of wax (soy, paraffin, vegetable, or other) as all burning items create soot as a product of incomplete combustion. It all has to do with the quality of the wick and the proper care of the candle! Candles should not be burned for more than four hours at a time. It is recommended that they burned for four hours, then extinguished and let cool for two hours before relighting. So, let's talk about Christmas dinner. How to dress up your Holiday planters even if ground is frozen.

How many of you are just getting into the Christmas mode, and wanting to dress up your planters , which are of course, frozen solid. Usually I do evergreens in my planters  in September, after we have had 2 killing frosts. What can you do? First, pull out the dead flowers.

Cut some young Birch trees, and place the birch poles on top of the soil in the planter.

Cut bunches of balsam, and attach bundle to bitch log using cable ties. Keep making up bundles of balsam, and attach at various points to the birch poles.

When it snows, your boughs will be covered so it is a good idea to leave some greens hanging over the edges of your planter.

Add some red pine, or cedar, or other evergreens you may have on hand.

You can add a pair of skates, old watering cans, ribbons, large sugar cones, and more.

This is my pile of balsam which came from our trails in the bush, which needed trimming.

Some of us are Winter people, and some of us just HATE Winter, well, maybe we love it until Christmas, then we would be quite happy if it just went away. It's minus thirty something out there , feels like -500. Have box, will travel. A wreath makes a perfect Gift for someone who used to live here, and now lives out in some other part of Canada. Simply place wreath in box, and mail or send by bus.

Since it's all evergreens, it doesn't matter if it freezes. Imagine the delight and the aroma of fresh greens, you can't bottle that. Try to get your orders in early, especially if it has to be shipped. A round of Gouda cheese from Thunder Oak Cheese Farm would fit nicely in the middle.

Celebrate the Handmade at Artisans Northwest 2014, Camille Overmeer

Celebrate the HANDMADE !  Plan to attend The Artisans Northwest Show : on this weekend at the Valhalla Inn. Sat. Nov. 15, 10-6p. Sunday Nov. 16, 10-4p Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.

The Artisans Northwest Art Show is on this Sat. Nov.15.   10-6p. Sun. Nov.16     10-4p, at the VALHALLA INN You can find us in the Oden Room, booth # 54. This is one of the smaller rooms to the side of the main ballroom, opposite the Viking Room. We will have our fresh Christmas Wreaths ( like the one in the photo above), and dried and faux floral arrangements. Many hours have been spent climbing in and out of ditches, picking birch, osier dogwood, and wintergreens, in order to make up the freshest product possible for you. These designs are limited in quantity, and the Artisans Show is the best place to get our fresh wreaths. As long as greens have been picked after 2 consecutive frosts, they will last. So it's not to soon to get your Winter wreaths up. The sooner you get started, the more time you will have to enjoy them. This is a good time to pull out your Christmas decorations, start sorting them by colour. Give away the ones that have seen better days ( we really don't want to hear you say that you are still hanging on to a wreath we made 20 years ago!). Then sort the rest into a theme, see what you need to buy new to update your collection. And ask our advice, that's what we are here for.
